Is mindfulness demotivating?

On the face of it, mindfulness might seem counterproductive in a workplace setting. A fundamental technique of mindfulness meditation, after all, is to take things as they are. Yet companies want their employees to be more moved. And the very notion of motivation — trying to acquire a more desirable future — implies a certain amount of discontentment with the present, which seems at odds with a mental exercise which instills equanimity and a sense of calm.

Even for a small business owner, one could immediately recognize how this would be a bad thing (or at least not a good thing). If you’re trying to grow your business and list of clients in order to make a living, you don’t want to take the mentality of just accepting things the way they are.
